Dive Computers and Gauges

Dive Computers and Gauges

A scuba diving computer is something that most divers will use. When you first do your dive course (Open water) you will be taught how to calculate nitrogen levels via a table. This is something that every diver needs to know how to do, as this prevents decompression sickness. However tables are kind of old school now, just like now adays if we have to add some sums, we would grab a calculator. With diving, now we grab a  dive computer in stead of a table. Many charters and dive companies do not allow divers to go out with them unless they have a computer console now, this is because the dive table is extremely conservative. The general rule when diving in a group is when one diver needs to go up, everyone else goes up with them. So when everyone has a computer, all divers can stay down longer and enjoy their dive for a little longer.

During a dive, nitrogen from your breathing air dissolves into body tissues due to the increased pressure. The deeper you dive, the faster nitrogen dissolves into your body so it’s important to keep this dissolved nitrogen within accepted limits to minimize the risk of decompression sickness. To do this, your scuba computer tracks your dive depth and time and it calculates theoretical nitrogen using a decompression model and displays the time and depth limits you need to stay within. This is just one of the console or watch features that a computer has. You can get an expenisive dive computers and a cheap dive computer, however they will both do what you need including times, depths, safety stops and temperaturs. The more you spend of a computer, the more extra functions you will get. Nitrox, more gas mixes, digital compass, wireless transmitter (air integration) and more will determine price. There are 2 types of computers that you can get, a dive computer watch and a dive gauge. The watch straps to your arm, where the gauge is connected to your regulator 1st stage. There is no best dive computer, its what ever suits your type of diving and your budget. Most computers are water resistant to 100 meters.

Here at Dive Warehouse we carry Mares and Oceanic, Sunnto, Cressi computers at all price points and our staff are all divers so can help you choose the computer that suits you, your diving and your budget.
