Product Description

The Mares Sten Pneumatic Speargun has been around for quite some time now and is extremely popular for divers who are looking for a compact gun that can be easily stored away. It is a popular pick when choosing an air powered speargun due to it short length of 42cm or 70cm, is perfect for shallow reef diving and catching crays and small reef fish. This pneumatic speargun is universally appreciated by all spearfishermen for its accuracy, power, and reliability. The way that this particular pneumatic gun works is by using compressed air which propels the spear out of the barrel. There is a chamber inside the gun that you pump up using the hand pump provided to fill the chamber with air and this take approx 100 pumps which will give more than enough power to penetrate through small to mid size reef fish and crays. There is a piston inside the barrel that moves when the spear is loaded and is what pushes the spear out when shot. Having the piston prevent air from escaping when the gun is shot which means that no air is released, giving you multiple shots without having to pump up the gun every time. Depending on how often you use the gun, will depend on how long it will take for more air to be added.

The Mares Sten guns come with a 8mm shaft that has a screw on tip that can be changed if the tip gets blunt after time, it also comes with some line, the simple loader and hand held pump. It meets the needs of fishermen looking for great power and reliability, yet at a compact size. Generally this gun is used by boat owners who are looking to jump over board to catch their dinner, then store it away for the next meal. The 42cm gun is a great gun for crays and small fish. The length of gun does not determine the amount of power, the length determines how far of range you will have and the general rule is that the range from handle to tip of spear is 4 times the length of the gun so being 42cm, you will get approx 1.68m of shooting range (or 70cm, 2.8m). The operating line pressure is 13 BAR and the connecting piston is 1.5mm. The ergonomic handle is extremely comfortable to hold and this particular gun comes with an added feature of a holster that straps to your leg when diving so you can keep your gun out of the way with both hands free until you need to us it.

To load the pneumatic gun, you use a "loader". This comes with the gun when you purchase it and is a small black plastic hand piece. This is held on the tip of the spear and is what you use to push the spear in to the gun against the air pressure. Generally you will use your thigh as the supporter to help push the spear in or the top of your foot depending on the length of the gun. This is just as difficult as loading a standard rubber railgun as you are pushing against lots of pressure. The loader is something that you do not want to loose as if you lose it, you will no longer be able to load your speargun. Here at Dive Warehouse we recommend on always having a spare, so tie some thin rope to your loader and have it connected to your self or your gun to prevent from dropping or loosing it.

Please note that the gun is already filled with air when you receive it so it is advised to not fill it further. Also it is crucial that you DO NOT SHOOT THE GUN OUT OF WATER as this will break the gun and is not covered under warranty.

Extras:   When purchasing a speargun, there are a few extras that we recommend you purchase to complete your kit. A float rope and divers float are the two main extras. The rope is connected to the gun at handle and the other end of the rope is to be connected to the float, this will ensure you will not loose your gun by accidental dropping it, or having a fish steal it! (It does happen). A pair of gloves is another item that we recommend you purchase also. Once you have shot your fish, trying to grab it and finish the kill can be very difficult without gloves. Fish are not only slippery but also have made spikes and teeth. Gloves will prevent cuts and scratches as well as grip. Here at Dive Warehouse we are loading with information regarding spearfishing, gear and tips so feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

What is the warranty?

Mares Spearguns have a 2 year warranty on the handle, trigger mech and barrel.

Do I need a license to buy a speargun?

You do not need a license to purchase a speargun, howevere you may need a fishing license depending on which state you are in. In Queensland you do not need a fishing license.

How do I load my pneumatc speargun?

If the gun is short enough, you can place the butt of the gun on your hip and use the simle loader to load the spear using both hands. If the pneumatic gun is too long for you to reach when it is on your hip, place the butt of the gun on your foot with your foot flexed and load the gun this way.

How do I know when the gun needs more air?

The Mares pneumatic spear guns come pre-pumped so you will not have to pump them up when you purchase them. When you start to feel the shooting power dropping off, you will need to add a few extra pumps in to the barrel using the provided hand pump.

Where can I go spearfishing on the Gold Coast?

On the Gold Coast, you will need to stay out of all of the rivers and the broadwater. Stick to the headlands and ocean. There are fines if you get caught where you should not be and your gear can be confiscated.

What length is best for me?

The best length of speargun for you depends on where you are spearfishing. If you are in shallow reef waters then a shorter gun from 50cm -110cm is perfect. If you are in deep open waters then 110cm - 140cm is perfect.

Which one is a beginner gun?

All of the spearguns work in a simular way. There is no such one as a beginner gun, its more about quailty and what you are prepared to spend for your first gun. The more you spend, the better the quality they will be.

Can I shoot the gun out of water?

No, this is dangerous and all spearguns are to be used in water only.

What else do I need once I have my speargun?

Once you have purchased your speargun, you will need a knife to kill your catch, a float and flag to connect the gun to and your mask, snorkel and fins. These are the necessary items however there are many more things you can add on like a wetsuit, gloves, socks, stringer, flasher & more.
