Choosing a Spearfishing Mask

What is a Spearfishing Mask?

A spearfishing mask is specifically designed for diving deep depths on a breath hold. They are all made with 100%  black silicone and are very low volume in size. The reason for the black silicone is to tunnel your vision to give you a clearer focus on what you are looking at and prevent any glare. When spearfishing, you are aiming for that one fish so you do not want to be distracted by anything else which is where the black colour helps out. A low volume mask is one that has minimal air inside the mask when worn. The purpose of this is to have the least amount of air to be equalized when diving. When you dive deep, the mask gets compressed towards your face and can have a squeezing feeling on the inside which can ultminately burst blood capilleries in your eyes so equalizing your mask is very important. To do this, you simply blow out a small amount of air from your nose to fill the fill the mask and this prevents the mask squeeze.

The Fit:

Your mask is one of the most important items to have as this is what allows you to see all of the amazing life underwater,  so the fit is a very important thing to go for when making a purchase as this will make or break your experience. It doesn’t matter what brand or colour the mask is, if it doesn’t fit your face then it may as well be thrown away or given to someone else who it does fit. Water leaking in can not only ruin your experience with vision but it can also cause stress and that is the last thing you want. Make sure you take some time to try masks on before committing to one and choose wisely. Spearfishing masks are all slightly different in shape and style, however there is no specific sizing as they are all designed for adults but vary in shape.

The Silicone Skirt:

All of the spearfishing masks that we have here at Dive Warehouse are made from 100% silicone. They all have black silicone which tunnels your vision to give you a clearer focus and also shades your eyes from the sun. Being 100% silicone, they are extremely soft and comfortable to wear for long periods at a time.

The Lens:

All of the dive masks are made from tempered glass, no matter the brand. The two different lens styles are single lens and the twin lens. The single lens masks have one piece of glass that eliminates and frame between your eyes giving you less obstruction. The twin lens style mask has two separate lenses that are held together by the frame. If you are looking for a mask that is able to take prescription lenses then the twin lens masks are the way to go, however there are only certain masks that have the ability to do this.

The Frame:

There are two types of frame styles that we stock and include the plastic standard frame and the frameless style. The plastic is of course made from a top quality plastic that supports the lenses and skirt. The frameless style means that there is no plastic to it and the lenses are held together by a thick silicone that acts as a frame. The frameless can be folded down to a flat pancake to be kept as a spare mask. If you want to add on a mask camera mount, you will need to choose a plastic frame mask.

The Strap:

Majority of the masks in the spear world have silicone straps which are soft and durable and are pretty universal with size however there are a few styles out there that have a webbing strap with a neoprene tamer on the rear. These are more durable and do not perish as silicone can. Keep in mind that you can also purchase a mask tamer that you can thread over your current silicone strap. The tamers slide on and off without pulling at your hair so alot more comfortable.
